What is the Scottish equivalent of a Bastle house
« on: September 08, 2014, 06:13:13 AM »
Hello

I work in Cumbria and Northumberland - the other side of the Border. Down here we have a legacy from the days of border conflicts - Bastle houses. Essentially two story heavily walled stone houses. The ground floor was to keep the animals safe but the upper floor had safe access ( such as by ladder which could then be withdrawn).

Just wondered what the Scottish equivalent is? I know there are Pele towers in Scotland but they seem a rung up on the affluence ladder compared to these bastle houses.

You can see an example here.

Thank you
